Types Of Racehorse Ownerships

Individual Ownership

Individual ownership is one way but it can be very expensive if you are paying all the bills yourself but you also get to enjoy all the benefits of owning a racehorse without having to work in with anyone else and of course you don’t have to share the stakes money that your horse might win.

Partnerships

Partnerships are currently the most common form of ownership, whereby as few as 2 and as many as 10 people can group tighter to share the cost and the fun of racing a horse. NZTR govern that if there are more than 4 members in the partnership then a racing manager must be appointed to communicate between the other partners and the trainer as well as to ensure the administration of the partnership is carried out correctly.

Similarly Syndication facilitates multi-person ownership but unlike Partnerships there is not restriction to the number of members within each syndicate. Each syndicate is headed by a registered syndicate manager who may be authorized to control the syndicate for administration purposes and is responsible for communicating between the trainer and the various syndicate members, for carrying out the general administration duties such as registering the syndicate, changing the ownership of the horse over to the syndicate from the vendor and completing the paperwork needed to name the horse on behalf of the syndicate. The manager is also responsible for paying the horses bills and distributing the financial statements associated with the horse.

Leasing

An excellent option for first-time owners, providing the opportunity to race a horse without having to find the initial capital outlay. The leasee is seen as the ‘owner’ of the horse during it’s racing career and is therefore responsible for covering all the costs associated with the horse during this time, as well as collecting the prizemoney which may be earned. A formal agreement must be lodged with NZTR and the terms of each lease may vary from lease to lease.

Whether you own your horse outright or as part of a group all owners can expect to enjoy:
  • The thrill of selecting your horse
  • The fun of picking a name for your horse
  • Visiting the stables to see your horse or watching your horse during early morning track work
  • Full ownership privileges on course which include (subject to the majority of race courses) 2 complimentary Owner’s badges on raceday for each owner accompanied by complimentary race books. Access to the parade ring or birdcage area where after a complimentary glass of bubbles you can discuss tactics with Lance. Access to the Owner’s stand to watch the race from the best seat on course.
  • Stakes earnings if your horse wins or is placed
  • The excitment and anticipation which go hand in had with pre-race nerves and if you are lucky enough to have a winner the thrill is second to none.
