YOU BEAUTY!!
Beauty Sparkle (Snippetson ex End of The Blues) is a prime example that you don’t have to spend mega bucks to buy a good, athletic type. Prepared by Jon and Karin Hogin and sold for $55,000 to Lance and Leigh he has gone on to win both his starts and will now head up to Hong Kong. The same year the couple also purchased Heza Rebel (Perfectly Ready ex Clifton) who went through the Rich Hill draft and sold for $35,000. Boxing Day winner Viadana (Towkay ex Yeah Nah) was purchased the previous year for $25,000 along with the Karaka Millions place getter Sirrio (Captain Rio ex Lacy Tops) who was purchased for $15,000.

NEW YEAR ROUND-UP
Well what a fantastic finish to the old year and a dominant start the New Year! The Matamata Stables once again influential across the marathon of holiday racing the length and breadth of the Island which says a lot about the quality of horses and staff that we have here at Matamata this season. Lance Noble Racing was no exception bringing home a brace of winners on Boxing day when MEDICI (ably ridden by Masa Tanaka) showed a handy turn off foot when blazing home in the 2300m Courtesy Ford Handicap at Awapuni and VIADANA (ridden a beauty by Cameron Lammas) was determined to secure the Auckland City Co-Op Taxi Mile at Ellerslie, eventuating in a raging party with all concerned in attendance along with a few committee members and the odd Clarke of the Course in the Winner’s Circle following the last!! Medici’s win came only 12 days from his last triumphant start at Counties in the Deph Common 2200m when he was given a super ride by the inform Craig Grylls. Viadana’s Boxing Day success was on the wall following her tough run in the Print House Mile at Te Rapa only nine days previous. Both Medici and Viadana will now head to Trentham later this month. BEAUTY SUPREMO battled on for a game 2nd on the middle day of the Ellerslie carnival when both he and the Murray Baker trained Oak Park pulled away from the rest of the field to battle it out over the last 200m. The appalling weather conditions at Taupo on the 30th December didn’t put the owners off and thanks to the mini marquees they were able to watch ASTROGAL run on for a lovely 3rd placing. Ridden a treat by Craig Grylls the filly looks like she is on track for an exciting summer of racing ahead. Named appropriately BRAVE ALI (ridden by Vinnie Colgan) ran a bold 2nd on New Year’s Day at Ellerslie following on from his tough win at Te Rapa on the 17th December. MERCURY MISTRESS also showed the New Year’s Day crowd that she still loves the game when she ungenerously received a squeeze 300m out from the post. A quick thinking Sam Spratt immediately switched to the rail whereupon Mercury Mistress fearlessly made the dive for 3rd place in the Lindauer 1400m. The final success for the Christmas/New Year carnival of racing (and probably my favourite) was BEAUTY SPARKLE’s emphatic win in the Goldridge Marine Farms 1000m at Thames on the final day of the hols. Earlier weather forecasts may have kept some away but the turn out on course was still impressive and the resulting fields at the Thames Jockey Club did not disappoint. The unique, Coromandle course provided punters with an afternoon of fantastic racing and entertainment with most races on the card eventuating in dramatic finishes of one sort or another. This race brought Beauty Sparkle’s tally of results to 2 wins from 2 starts.
All in all New Zealand really laid on a fantastic carnival of racing all across the country throughout the holdiay period. It was a joy to watch and everyone involved deserves a pat on the back. Well done everyone, good job!!
2010/11 SEASON ROUND UP
We finished the 2010/11 season 18th on the Trainers Premiership with 27 wins from 245 starters, 17 seconds and 31 thirds. Our most consistant horse during the year would have to be the Marie Leicester owned Annie Higgins who won the listed Sunline Vase, was second in the Group 2 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes and 3rd in the both the Group 2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic and the Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic.
Thorn Park, sire of the Easdon No:2 Racing Syndicate owned Headsup, won the 2010/11 Grosvenor Stallion Award for the most stakes earnings won by his progeny during the season as well as leading 3 year old sire. Headsup has always been a popular filly in the stable due to her determination and dependability; from 30 career starts she has has provided us with 5 wins, 8 seconds (including 2 at listed level), 3 thirds (including 1 at listed level), 2 fourths and 4 fifths, finishing on well for a well earnt 8th in the Group 1 Te Aroha Breeders Stakes.
Waikato Stud’s Pins won the 2010/11 Centaine Stallion Award for his incredible world wide stakes earnings. Amoungst successes in America the sire also enjoyed huge success Ambitious Dragon who won 3 Group 1’s in Hong Kong during the year. Hopefully this is a good sign for the future here at Lance Noble Racing as one of our popular yearling selections for syndication in February was a beautiful filly by Pins out of the Van Nistelroy mare Vannista Belle who is currently working well in her first prep in the stable. A quick mention should also go to Beauty Flash (Golan ex Wychwood Rose) who was educated here at Lance Noble Racing before heading off to Hong Kong for a stellar career. During the past season he won 3 Group 1 races and was awarded the Champion Miler award at the end of the season.
The 2010/11 season was also a big year for our stable apprentice Alvin Ng. A trainee from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Alvin was sent to us in 2009 to gain valuble race riding experience in New Zealand. Alvin was very dedicated and worked very hard to get as much as he could from his time in New Zealand and quickly became a very popular member of the racing community before returning to Hong Kong to commence his apprenticeship in June after clocking up 70 winners here in NZ. We were very fortunate to be invited to Kong Kong by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for Alvin’s debute at Sha Tin where he rode 2 winners and several placings. Alvin is indentured to Denis Yip and we look forward to watching his career develop in Hong Kong.
In February we welvomed Silver Wong to New Zealand. Silver is also a trainee from Hong Kong who had been riding for David Ferraris. Unlike Alvin who had spent some time in Australia before coming to New Zealand Silver has come to us straight from the training academy. Silver is currently a Probationer and is gaining valuable experience riding at the trials. Silver has a lovely personality and is already becoming very popular within the New Zealand racing community and we are looking forward to watching Silver progress over the coming months.
This season we have some exciting new talent waiting to make a start on thier career as well as some good old names. Geeza is continuing to work well and has provided us with some consitant results out of Moira Murdoch’s stable. He’s really befitted from working on the beach and we are really looking forward to watching him winning again this season. Headsup has been doing some excellent work on the training tracks so fingers crossed she gets some nice draws and tracks to get the wins that she deserves. Heza Rebel is hanging out for a good track, as is Cristal Heights but watch out when they do. Medici ran a very close second at the Te Teko trials but was hampered on the home straight by another horse on his first outing this prep last week. Michael Coleman rated him beautifully but got boxed in and wasn’t able to safely get out whcih made it a bit of a non event. Viadana is working well on the hills and we are really looking forward to seeing how much stronger she will be this time in.
2011 KARAKA YEARLING SALES
Day 1 of the Premier Sale was a touch more conservative than last year’s with an average sale price of $165,894, down 9% on last year’s average of $181,557. Local buyers were noticeably quiet however the marked surge in strength during Day 2’s session gave Vendors some much needed confidence. By the end of the sale the average price had risen to $175,864 which was down by only 4% on last year which had been New Zealand Bloodstock’s second best sale on record.
Buyers commented on the amount of quality stock on offer, the depth in the pedigrees and added to the current exchange rate this must have looked very attractive to the overseas buying bench.
Not to be out done we bought Lot 9, a cracking half sister to VONUSTI by the current leading first season sire Perfectly Ready out of the Sound Reason mare Reasonably for stable clients. Presented in fantastic order by Brighthill Farm the filly’s family has been performing at the higher levels for years. Long time stable clients Alan and Rob Burnet and Alan and Colleen Jackson bought Lot 26 an O’Reilly filly out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Sadler’s Home. We know this family very well so we are very excited at the prospect of having her in the stable.
On day 1 of the Select Sale the market continued on solidly with plenty of competitive bidding. We were lucky enough to secure our first picks in Lots 628 and 643 with a view to syndicate. Lot 628 is a bay Volksraad colt out of Toohottohandle. The mare was a winner herself and is the half sister to Castletown Stakes winner PEARLY SPENCER amongst others. He’s a very correct and strong type with a great walk who will get up and run. Lot 463 is a Pins filly out of the Van Nistelrooy mare Vannista Belle who was herself a winner over a mile and is the half sister to Desert Rain, Tsarina Belle, Housemaster and Kiwinsky. This filly is not only athletic but she is eye-catchingly beautiful and has a great walk.
Purchases on day 2 of the Select Sale included Lot 748 a Thorn Park filly out of Centapin, who was trained here at Easdon Lodge by Lance; she won 5 races and this is her first foal. She is very athletic and if she has half the heart that her mother had we’re defiantly onto a winner. We plan to syndicated this filly amoungst a small group of owners and interest in him has been very positive so far. The second purchase of the day was Lot 789 for stable clients, a bay filly by Darci Brama out of the Kinjite mare Diaga. Diaga was herself a winner of 7 races including Group company and Lance also trained the half brother to this yearling First Time, who won 4 races.
Our final purchase from the Select session was Lot 928, a Keeper colt out of Volksraad mare Inshelucky. He is an extremly athletic colt whohas been bought on behalf of stable clients.

MERCURY MISTRESS - 2010 SOUTHERN FILLY OF THE YEAR
Mercury Mistress's only start in the Southern Filly of the Year series resulted in a dominant win in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes over 1600m on the 10th April. Raced by the Burnet and Jackson families the 3 year old filly by No Excuse Needed out of the Centaine mare Flytaine lead for most of the race crossing the line 3/4 length in front of Champaign Joy and a further 1 1/2 lengths from The Beekeeper who finished 3rd.
The Southern Filly series is made up of 4 listed races run between September and April ranging in distance from 1200m to 2000m. The first, second and third fillies home are awarded 7 points, 3 points and 1 point respectively with the winner of the series accumulating the most points throughout the duration.
The final race in the series was the Warstep Stakes on 24th April with Mercury Mistress being the only runner of 3 fillies joinly tied on 7 points to remain in the field at acceptances time. Previous to this her only run over a distance of 2000m was in the NZB Royal Stakes at Ellerlie when she finished 5th behind Adaline and Katie Lee. The weather conditions on Saturday were a god-send to the local farmers but not idea for racing and a down-grade in the track meant that it was going to be a tough ask for most of the fillies in the race. Although she put in a top effort and gamely contested the lead on the turn it was just too much to ask from her. Completing the series on 7 points Mercury Mistress retained her position as joint winner providing her connections with a huge thrill and a great achievement.
EXCITEMENT AS STABLE REPRESENTED
IN THE 2010 HONG KONG DERBY
This year’s prestigious Mercedes- Benz Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin will include 2 past residents of Easdon Lodge. BEAUTY FLASH (Golan out of the Danske mare Wychwood Rose) was originally bought by bloodstock agent Dan O’Donnell from the Windsor Park yearling draft for owner Mr Kwok Siu-Ming before being placed with Lance to be educated before heading to Tony Cruz’s stable in Hong Kong. He broke through his maidens in his 3rd start in New Zealand and to date his race record in Hong Kong reads 6 wins, a 2nd and a 3rd from 8 starts.
BRAVE KID, an Elusive City gelding out of the Kaapstad mare Gordon’s, was originally bought by a stable client and trained by Lance before being sold to Hong Kong. He has gone on to win each of his 6 starts in Hong Kong for trainer John Size and his breeding on the Dam’s side suggests that the 2000m Derby distance will be no problem.

Ten To One
Waikato Times, Your Weekend, by Kathy Graham
23 January 2010
When Matamata trainer Lance Noble and wife Leigh paid top price at the National Yearling Sales last year for a colt, there were some nervous moments for the young couple.
Securing the horse for $800,000, Leigh Noble says the purchase was a "real gamble". A registered syndicator, Leigh Noble had only half the people needed to fill a syndicate with the horse, one she and her husband couldn't afford to keep a half share in themselves...
